SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST: PHILIP BARLOW

I can’t claim to know much about South African artists and who some of these remarkably talented people are, but there is one artist in particular who completely took my breath away when I first saw some of his pieces on Pinterest. I was even more surprised to learn he was South African.

Philip Barlow, a Pietermaritzburg born artist now lives and paints in Noordhoek, Cape Town. He describes his work as using everyday scenes, where he explores illuminated moments within our seemingly ordinary lives.

He goes on to say the following when describing figures in his landscapes:

The figures in the landscape serve as carriers and reflectors of the light that falls upon them. Bathed in the luminosity, it is my hope that they would become more beautiful. To me, light is the ultimate subject because it embodies the pinnacle of all reality.”
